Nature-Based Therapy

Let Nature Help You Exhale

Sometimes healing does not happen only by talking. Sometimes it happens when you step outside, feel your feet on the ground, breathe fresh air, and let your nervous system settle.

Nature-based therapy at B-rooted blends traditional counseling with time spent outdoors so you can process what you are carrying in a way that feels natural, gentle, and supportive. Whether we are walking through the forest, sitting near water, or simply being outside together, nature helps create a sense of calm and perspective that is hard to find indoors.

This is therapy for people who feel stuck in their heads and want to feel more connected to their bodies, their emotions, and the world around them.

When You Might Be Drawn to Nature-Based Therapy:

You feel anxious, overwhelmed, or constantly on edge

You feel disconnected from yourself, your body, or your sense of meaning

You spend most of your time indoors and notice it affecting your mood or energy

You feel emotionally heavy and need space to breathe and release

You have experienced stress, burnout, or trauma and want a gentler way to heal

You feel restored in nature and want to bring that into your healing work

What Becomes Possible

Nature-based therapy helps you feel more calm, grounded, and connected. Being outdoors often makes it easier for your nervous system to settle, your thoughts to slow down, and your body to release tension. Over time, you may notice that stress feels less overwhelming, emotions feel more approachable, and clarity comes more naturally. You feel more present in your body, more connected to yourself, and more able to reflect without feeling stuck or flooded. Rather than feeling confined or overstimulated, you begin to experience more ease, perspective, and space inside. This creates room for insight, healing, and a renewed sense of steadiness as you move through your life.

More Calm in Your Body

Being outdoors helps your nervous system slow down so you feel less tense, less rushed, and more at ease.

Clearer Thoughts and Perspective

Nature offers space to step back from loops of worry or self-criticism and see your life with more clarity and kindness.

Emotional Release

Walking, breathing, and being in open space often makes it easier to feel and move through emotions instead of holding them inside.

A Sense of Belonging

Spending time in nature can remind you that you are part of something bigger, connected, supported, and not alone.

A Gentler Way to Heal

Nature-based therapy is not about pushing yourself or fixing yourself. It is about creating the right conditions for healing to unfold naturally, at your pace, in a way that feels safe and supportive.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the meaning of nature therapy?

Nature therapy is an approach that supports mental and emotional well-being through connection with the natural world.

This can include spending time outdoors, engaging with natural environments, or incorporating nature-based practices into therapy sessions. The goal is to help regulate the nervous system, reduce stress, and create a deeper sense of calm and connection.

What is the 20-5-3 rule for nature?

The 20-5-3 rule is a guideline for incorporating nature into your routine for better well-being:

  • 20 minutes in nature, at least 3 times a week (like a walk in a park)
  • 5 hours a month in more immersive natural settings (like hiking or longer outdoor time)
  • 3 days a year in deeper nature (like camping or retreats)

It’s a simple way to stay consistently connected to nature in everyday life.

What is another name for nature therapy?

Nature therapy is also commonly referred to as:

  • Ecotherapy
  • Nature-based therapy
  • Green therapy
  • Outdoor therapy

All of these approaches emphasize the healing benefits of connecting with the natural environment.

What are examples of natural therapies?

Natural therapies can include a range of practices that support well-being through nature, such as:

  • Guided walks or talk therapy outdoors
  • Mindfulness or meditation in nature
  • Forest bathing (immersive time in wooded environments)
  • Gardening or working with plants
  • Grounding practices (like walking barefoot on natural surfaces)

These approaches help calm the nervous system and support emotional regulation.

Is nature therapy covered by insurance?

Our registered counsellors are covered by a variety of extended health insurance plans. This means that, depending on your provider, you may be able to get full or partial reimbursement for your sessions.

It’s helpful to know that each counselling registration body is different, and insurance coverage can depend on which professional designation your counsellor holds (such as RCC, CCC, or RSW). Because every plan is unique, we recommend checking directly with your provider to confirm what’s included in your coverage.

Our intern counsellors, while highly skilled and closely supervised, are not yet covered by insurance — which is why they offer reduced-rate sessions to help keep support accessible.

For the most part, we do not offer direct billing. After your session, we’ll provide you with a receipt that you can submit to your insurance provider for reimbursement.

If you have any questions, we’re happy to walk you through it during your free 15-minute consultation, so you can feel confident and informed before booking.
