What is somatic therapy?

It focuses on how stress, trauma, and emotions are held in the nervous system, not just in thoughts. By bringing awareness to physical sensations and gently working with the body, somatic therapy helps release stored tension and build a greater sense of safety and regulation.

Is somatic therapy effective?

Yes—many people find somatic therapy highly effective, especially for stress, anxiety, and trauma.

Research and clinical experience show that working with the nervous system can lead to lasting changes, particularly when traditional talk therapy hasn’t fully addressed the physical impact of stress or trauma.

What does a somatic therapy session look like?

A somatic therapy session is typically slower and more guided than traditional talk therapy.

Along with conversation, you may be invited to notice body sensations, breathing, or subtle physical responses. The therapist helps you stay within a comfortable range while gently exploring these experiences, so your system can process and release tension safely.

Is somatic therapy covered by insurance?

Our registered counsellors are covered by a variety of extended health insurance plans. This means that, depending on your provider, you may be able to get full or partial reimbursement for your sessions.

It’s helpful to know that each counselling registration body is different, and insurance coverage can depend on which professional designation your counsellor holds (such as RCC, CCC, or RSW). Because every plan is unique, we recommend checking directly with your provider to confirm what’s included in your coverage.

Our intern counsellors, while highly skilled and closely supervised, are not yet covered by insurance — which is why they offer reduced-rate sessions to help keep support accessible.

For the most part, we do not offer direct billing. After your session, we’ll provide you with a receipt that you can submit to your insurance provider for reimbursement.
