Somatic Trauma Therapy

Virtual & In-Person Somatic, Trauma-Informed Counselling in Comox Valley, BC

Healing Trauma Through the Body

You’ve tried to understand it. Maybe you’ve talked it through, reflected on it, even made sense of your past.

But your body still reacts.

Tension, anxiety, shutdown, overwhelm—it shows up before you can think your way through it. And no matter how much insight you have, something still feels stuck. Somatic trauma therapy works differently.

Instead of focusing only on your thoughts, we gently work with your nervous system—the place where trauma is actually held. This allows your body to process what it couldn’t at the time, so you can begin to feel safer, calmer, and more in control again. This is therapy for people who are ready to move beyond understanding their trauma… and begin releasing it.

What Starts to Shift

Somatic trauma therapy is grounded in the understanding that trauma isn’t just a story—it’s a physiological experience stored in the nervous system. At B-rooted, we work slowly and safely to help your body complete stress responses that were interrupted, release held tension, and build a greater sense of internal safety. Rather than reliving or rehashing painful experiences, this work focuses on creating new experiences of regulation, choice, and stability in the present moment. This approach is gentle, collaborative, and paced to your system.

A More Regulated Nervous System

You feel less reactive and more steady, even in situations that once felt overwhelming.

Release of Stored Stress & Tension

Your body begins to let go of patterns it’s been holding onto for years.

A Sense of Safety Within Yourself

Instead of bracing or shutting down, you start to feel more grounded and secure.

Greater Emotional Flexibility

You can move through emotions without getting stuck in them.

A Body That Feels Like Home Again

You’re no longer fighting against yourself—you’re working with your system.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you release somatic trauma?

Releasing somatic trauma involves working with the body and nervous system rather than only talking about past experiences.

This can include noticing physical sensations, gently completing stress responses (like fight, flight, or freeze), and building the body’s capacity to feel safe again. Over time, this allows stored tension and survival patterns to naturally unwind.

What organ holds trauma?

Trauma isn’t stored in a single organ—it’s held within the nervous system and experienced throughout the body.

However, people often feel trauma in areas like the chest, stomach, shoulders, or jaw, where stress responses tend to accumulate. Somatic therapy helps bring awareness to these areas so they can begin to release.

Are somatic therapy and EMDR the same?

Somatic therapy and EMDR are both trauma-focused approaches, but they work differently.

  • Somatic therapy focuses on body sensations and nervous system regulation
  • EMDR uses guided eye movements to help process traumatic memories

Both can be effective, and sometimes they’re even used together. Somatic therapy tends to be slower and more body-centered, focusing on building safety and regulation over time.

What are the criticisms of somatic therapy?

Some criticisms of somatic therapy include:

  • It can feel unfamiliar or abstract compared to traditional talk therapy
  • Progress may feel slower because it’s paced with the nervous system
  • It requires a trained practitioner to guide the process safely
  • There is still growing research compared to more established methods like CBT

That said, many people find somatic therapy effective—especially when other approaches haven’t fully addressed the physical impact of trauma.
