What is the difference between talk therapy and somatic therapy?
Talk therapy is what most people think of when they hear “counselling.” It involves having open, honest conversations to explore your thoughts, emotions, and life experiences. It can be a powerful way to gain clarity, feel heard, and find new ways of understanding.
Somatic therapy, while still grounded in safety and connection, invites the body into the healing process. Sometimes words aren’t enough — especially when it comes to stress or trauma that’s been held in the body for a long time. Somatic work gently brings awareness to physical sensations, breath, and movement, helping you reconnect with your body and release what’s been stored there.
At B-rooted Counselling, both approaches are welcome. Whether you feel most at home in conversation or want to explore what your body might be saying, we’ll work together in a way that feels supportive and just right for you.
Are you covered by insurance/benefits?
Our registered counsellors are covered by a variety of extended health insurance plans. This means that, depending on your provider, you may be able to get full or partial reimbursement for your sessions.
It’s helpful to know that each counselling registration body is different, and insurance coverage can depend on which professional designation your counsellor holds (such as RCC, CCC, or RSW). Because every plan is unique, we recommend checking directly with your provider to confirm what’s included in your coverage.
Our intern counsellors, while highly skilled and closely supervised, are not yet covered by insurance — which is why they offer reduced-rate sessions to help keep support accessible.
For the most part, we do not offer direct billing. After your session, we’ll provide you with a receipt that you can submit to your insurance provider for reimbursement.
If you have any questions, we’re happy to walk you through it during your free 15-minute consultation, so you can feel confident and informed before booking.
What happens during a somatic counselling session?
Somatic counselling is a gentle, body-based approach to therapy that helps you tune into the physical sensations, emotions, and patterns held in your body. Every session is unique and guided by your needs and comfort level.
In a somatic session, we’ll still talk — but we’ll also slow down and bring mindful attention to your body. You might be invited to notice your breath, explore how certain emotions show up physically, or try grounding practices that help you feel more connected and safe in the moment. Depending on your comfort, we may also explore simple movement, visualization, or other nervous system regulation tools.
One of the key principles in somatic therapy is titration. This means we take things slowly and in small, manageable steps — gently touching into difficult sensations or memories and then coming back to a place of calm and safety. It’s like dipping your toes into the water rather than diving in all at once. This helps prevent overwhelm and allows your body to process and release held tension or trauma at a pace that feels supportive and empowering.
There’s no “right” way to do somatic work — it’s always collaborative, consent-based, and guided by what feels right for you. If you’re curious, your counsellor can explain more during your free 15-minute consultation and help you explore whether this approach feels like a good fit.
How many somatic counselling sessions will I need?
The number of sessions really depends on you — your goals, your pace, and what you’re hoping to get out of the process. Somatic counselling is not a one-size-fits-all approach. Some people find clarity and relief in just a few sessions, while others choose to engage in longer-term work to gently explore deeper patterns and experiences held in the body.
Because somatic therapy works at the level of the nervous system, it often requires a slower, more mindful pace — especially when working with trauma or long-standing stress. That’s why we move with care, using techniques like titration (taking things step by step) to ensure the work feels safe and manageable.
Your counsellor will collaborate with you along the way to check in, revisit your goals, and adjust the pace as needed. Healing isn’t linear, and there’s no pressure to rush — at B-rooted Counselling, we honour your process and walk alongside you, wherever you’re at.
You’re always welcome to reach out to ask questions and get a sense of what feels right for you.
What is your cancellation policy?
We understand that life can be unpredictable, and sometimes plans need to change. If you need to cancel or reschedule a session, we kindly ask for at least 24 hours’ notice. This allows us to offer that time to someone else who may be waiting for an appointment.
Cancellations made with less than 24 hours’ notice — or missed sessions without notice — will be charged the full session fee. We know things come up, so if there’s an emergency or unexpected circumstance, please reach out.
Thank you for honouring this policy — it helps us hold consistency and care for both your time and ours.
Are the benefits of in person versus virtual counselling different?
Both virtual and in-person somatic counselling can be deeply effective — the choice really depends on your personal preferences, comfort level, and lifestyle.
In-person sessions offer the opportunity for direct physical presence, which some people find especially grounding when doing body-based work. Being in the same room allows for subtle non-verbal cues, such as body language and tone, which can deepen the connection and sense of safety. If you’re exploring somatic practices that involve movement or touch (with your full consent), in-person sessions may feel more supportive.
Virtual somatic counselling, on the other hand, can still be incredibly effective, even without being physically present. It offers the convenience of accessing therapy from the comfort of your own space, which can create a sense of safety and relaxation. Many clients also find that the virtual format encourages them to be more mindful of their body, as they’re focused more intently on the sensations within themselves during the session.
Whether you choose virtual or in-person, we’ll adapt the session to suit you and ensure you feel fully supported throughout your process.
If you’re unsure, feel free to discuss it with your counsellor.
